Returning to Horn
“I’m just getting back to the horn after many years away, and I’m uncertain of my level. Should I attend horn camp?”
Emphatically yes! Many of our regularly returning participants were in this exact position, and the answer is that the curriculum works for those of all levels. In fact, it even serves an individual person in different ways when they return! Those coming back to horn who attend KBHC find the following aspects of horn camp particularly helpful:
- Daily warm-ups provide material to pick and choose from that fits the participant’s current playing level
- Small groups with participants at a similar point in their playing provide the opportunity to share strategies of playing with each other and faculty members
- Lessons with our faculty focused on their current playing challenges
- Alexander Technique lessons for efficient and easeful playing posture
- Enjoyable ensemble rehearsals and performances with participants of similar playing ability
- The opportunity to learn and play the natural horn
- The choice to participate or not in solo classes and excerpts – participants can choose to play, listen, or not attend these sessions as best fits them
- The chance to hear fantastic, inspiring playing from peers, faculty, and staff
Note from a Returning Horn Player
“I have attended KBHC for the last two summers as an adult player who began horn playing in my late 50’s. The staff are all professional players who are welcoming, encouraging, and interested in teaching everyone, regardless of level. The curriculum focuses on fundamentals of breathing, sound production, phrasing, and articulation. The environment is animated by the excitement and talent of the high school and college students beginning their playing careers. They inspire the older player to produce our most beautiful sound, thus enhancing our musical journey.”
