For High School Students

“What is the experience like for high school students? Can I  feel comfortable sending my kid to camp?”

First, know that parents of high school students are able to join us on campus for the week for a minimal fee, which some parents choose to do. At the same time, we provide a safe and supportive environment for our high school students as they experience KBHC. Highlights of the benefits for high school students and their experience at camp include:

  • Working in lessons and small group settings with numerous faculty members at colleges they may be interested in attending
  • Extending their knowledge of warm-ups and routines
  • Expanding their work on solos and excerpts
  • Staying in a separate dorm with a curfew and staff chaperones
  • Creating bonds with other high school horn players from around the country
  • Learning from the older participants the richness of a life with music, whether that is as a student, professional or amateur

Note from a Mom

“Expert horn instruction in a safe, supportive, and enriching environment—that’s what Kendall Betts Horn Camp offers every hornist who spends the summer there.

After first attending KBHC as a parent with my hornist daughter, who was on the younger side and participating for the first time, I’ve now had the privilege of witnessing the magic of horn camp over multiple summers. When first attending, we were hoping for solid instruction. What we didn’t expect was a life-changing experience that would draw her back summer after summer and inspire her to pursue horn performance as a future goal.

For context, we have experienced numerous summer music programs from coast to coast, and we can confidently say that KBHC is the best-run program we have encountered. The camp coordinator ensures that every operational detail is thoughtfully prepared, allowing students to focus on learning and playing the horn. The directors cultivate a joyful, inclusive atmosphere where hornists of all levels and ages feel welcome. Highly skilled faculty further this culture by tailoring lessons to each hornist, while dedicated staff play a crucial role in supporting both students and daily operations.

Every hornist at KBHC contributes to a strong sense of community. The personal connections made with everyone from campers to professional hornists at each shared meal, class session, evening programming, and concert makes it easy to see why so many return each summer. My daughter counts down the weeks until horn camp and wishes it were a year-round school! As a parent, I’m grateful she has found a place where she is surrounded by like-minded peers and expert mentors. I have no doubt she’ll be part of this community for years to come.”

Note from a Student

“While at KBHC, I made several meaningful connections that have profoundly impacted my daily life. For one, I first met my current professor, Professor Kurau, two years before I joined his studio at the Eastman School of Music. My connection with Professor Kurau at this camp is what most encouraged me to audition at Eastman. However, this was one of many Eastman connections I formed at KBHC. During my first year at KBHC, as a junior in high school, I met two kids who were joining the Eastman Horn Studio the following fall. These two friends, along with several other friends I made at KBHC, would become influential in my process of applying to schools and eventually making a decision. During my second year at KBHC, I had all the friends I had made the year prior and left with even more friends whom I have stayed in contact with.”
