Bernhard Scully

 

International horn soloist, Bernhard Scully, is currently Professor of Horn at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is Artistic Director of Cormont Music. He spends his summer in New Hampshire as both the Artistic Director of the Kendall Betts Horn Camp and as the horn player of the North Country Chamber Players. Bernhard has been integrally involved with KBHC since the very beginning, having served as the first and only staff member during the summer of the inaugural camp in 1995 and bring a part of nearly every camp since.  During that time he was studying privately with Kendall while in high school. During those early years he further was mentored by Kendall while performing professionally with him in the Minnesota Orchestra. He served on the KBHC staff from 1995-2001 and was appointed to the faculty in 2002. He was appointed to the board of directors in 2016. Before Kendall Betts’ untimely passing in 2016, he asked Bernhard to assume the role of Artistic Director to carry on the camp legacy. 

Bernhard’s solo career has spanned across many genres from classical, to jazz and beyond, including being the former long-time horn player of the Canadian Brass and former principal horn of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. In the Canadian Brass he soloed with nearly all of North America’s symphony orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has performed as guest principal horn in many orchestras including the Pittsburgh Symphony and The Cleveland Orchestra. He has substituted and collaborated with many other symphonies including the San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Symphony. He was recently named principal horn of the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra and performs as principal horn of the Saint Bart’s Music Festival. He is a regular featured artist at international conventions and festivals and has numerous solo recordings to his credit. Among his many awards are top honors at numerous competitions, most notably being the first classical brass player to win a McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians. His degrees are from Northwestern University (with honors), and the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he attended on a Paul Collins Distinguished Graduate Fellowship. In 2010 the University of Wisconsin awarded him a Distinguished Alumni Award for excellence in artistry. His teachers include Herman Baumann, Kendall Betts, Douglas Hill, Roland Pandolfi, Frøydis Ree Werkre, and Gail Williams. He resides with his wife, Sarah, who is a music therapist and photographer; their three daughters, Ellie, Abby, Maddie; their Springer Spaniel, Gustav Mahler; and their two cats.
