The thirteenth annual KENDALL BETTS HORN CAMP will take place JUNE 6 - 29, 2008 at CAMP OGONTZ in LYMAN, NEW HAMPSHIRE. KBHC is a UNIQUE SEMINAR and RETREAT for horn players age 15 and older who are seriously interested in improving their performance skills and musicianship. Amateurs, professionals, students and educators are invited to study and perform in this intense program under the guidance of a world class faculty in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Curriculum is tailored to the needs and goals of each individual participant. The schedule includes private lessons, master classes, horn ensembles, mock orchestral auditions, informal performances and public concerts. Participants receive instruction in all aspects of playing the horn. FUNDAMENTALS: improve your breathing, embouchure, tone production, rhythm, articulation, phrasing, intonation, dynamics and endurance. SOLO REPERTOIRE and RECITAL PREPARATION: refine your solo performance abilities and perform in public if you wish. ORCHESTRAL REPERTOIRE and AUDITION PREPARATION: perfect your audition skills and knowledge of orchestral excerpts and take a mock audition if you so choose. ENSEMBLES: fine tune your capability to perform successfully in the horn section.
ENROLLMENT is LIMITED in order to enable a participant to faculty ratio 4:1. This ensures that every participant has an unparalleled opportunity to IMPROVE their TECHNIQUE and MUSICIANSHIP. All of this in a noncompetitive atmosphere of FUN and CAMARADERIE in the IDYLLIC COUNTRY SETTING of CAMP OGONTZ!
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
YOU MAY ATTEND ONE, TWO or THREE WEEKS: Week 1 will run FRIDAY, June 6 to FRIDAY, June 13, 2008. Week 2 will run SATURDAY, June 14 to SATURDAY, June 21, 2008. Week 3 will run SUNDAY, June 22 to SUNDAY, June 29, 2008. The first day of the week is an arrival day. The last day of the week is a departure day. There are 6 full days of instruction each week. Multi-week participants have two free days between sessions.
COST: $1,230 for one week; $2,410 for two weeks ($50 tuition discount plus one day free room and board); $3,590 for three weeks ($100 tuition discount plus two days free room and board). Non-playing spouse, parent, etc. auditor’s fee is $525 per week. The price of one week’s tuition is $880: Housing and meals are $350 per week. This amounts to about $22 per hour for instruction and $50 per day for room and board. Also, please remember that we are non profit, so these prices are set to only break even on expenses.
PAYMENT SCHEDULE: Application deposit: $125 per week (nonrefundable unless enrollment is full). Balance is due by May 15, 2008.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES: AMATEURS, PROFESSIONALS, EDUCATORS, COLLEGE and UNIVERSITY STUDENTS age 18 and older are registered to participate on a first-come, first-served basis until maximum enrollment is reached. APPLICATION PROCEDURES for HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: Acceptance for participation at KBHC for high school students scheduled to graduate in 2008, 2009 and 2010 is by qualifying application. You must be at least 15 years of age as of June 6, 2008, presently in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade and currently studying horn privately on a regular basis. The application includes a recording of your performance of three set pieces plus music of your own choice, a short essay on the subject "Why I Wish to Participate at KBHC in 2008" and two letters of recommendation. To receive the application forms and materials, send an e-mail with your name and address, telephone number, date of birth, current grade in school, and name of your horn teacher to HORNCAMP@aol.com or call with your information. Your application materials will be e-mailed as .pdf files upon approval of your preliminary information.
SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION: A LIMITED NUMBER of ONE WEEK SCHOLARSHIPS will be awarded on a competitive basis to deserving students age 15 through 27 (to 28). You may qualify (in the case of HS students) and/or reserve (in the case of college students) a place at camp if you are set in your plans to participate and apply for a scholarship as well.
