DOUGLAS HILL

Douglas Hill is Professor of Horn at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Emily Mead Baldwin Bell-Bascom Professor in the Creative Arts.  Doug earned his BM and Performer's Certificate at Indiana University, where he studied with Philip Farkas, and his MM at Yale University as a student of Paul Ingraham.

Besides being a current member of the Wisconsin Brass, he has played solo horn with the Rochester Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Henry Mancini Orchestra, in addition to the Madison Symphony. He has worked with the Spoleto Festival Brass Quintet, the Wingra Woodwind Quintet and the American and New York Brass Quintets.  He has released three solo and a variety of chamber ensemble recordings.

Well known as an author and composer, his extensive publications include Extended Techniques for the Horn, Introducing the French Horn, more than 20 articles, many varied original compositions and the educational video Hill on Horn.  His new text Collected Thoughts on Teaching, Learning, Creativity and Horn Performance is now available from International Music Publications Limited.

Hill's most recent pedagogical publications include "Warm-ups and Maintenance Sessions for the Horn Player", "From Vibrato to Trills to Tremolos for the Horn Player", and "High Range for the Horn Player". All are available, along with many of his more recent compositions, at: www.reallygoodmusic.com.  Douglas Hill has, for the past four years, served as a panelist and Chair of the Classical Music division for the youngARTS Awards and the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts centered in Miami, Florida. He also served as the Wind/Brass Adjudicator for the National Fischoff Chamber Music Competition held on the Notre Dame campus in the Spring of 2007."

Professor Hill has taught at the Oberlin Conservatory, Aspen Music School, conservatories in Beijing and Shanghai and the Sarasota Music Festival. He was a coach for the Asian Youth Orchestra in Hong Kong. Recently recognized as one of 20 international hornists to be included in the book 20th Century Brass Soloists by Michael Meckna, Hill has appeared as soloist and clinician throughout the U.S., Germany, France and China, including numerous international, national and regional brass and horn workshops.  Doug also has served as President and as a member of the Advisory Council of the International Horn Society.

Doug has joined us since 2003 and we have the distinct pleasure of welcoming him back for the entire session in 2008!
